Bahá’í Educator Jailed In Iran

As the United Nations General Assembly voted to adopt the resolution on the situation of human rights in Iran, the authorities in Iran were turning their attention to imprisoning yet another Bahá’í.

Negin Ghedamian was sentenced to five years in prison for her service as a teacher for the BIHE – the informal institute which is the only third level educational option available to Bahá’í teenagers in Iran. Bahá’í students are either denied access to universities and colleges, or expelled once it becomes known that they are members of the Bahá’í Faith.

Ms. Ghedamian, whose house was raided in May of 2011, was subsequently tried in Teheran but was released on bail. During the raid on her house and the homes across Iran of others associated with the BIHE, computers as well as notes and books related to the BIHE were removed.

An appeal against her sentence failed and she was arrested this week and taken to begin her prison sentence in Evin Prison in Teheran.
