Ireland has called on the authorities in Yemen to immediately release all Bahá’ís who have been detained due to their religious beliefs and has pledged to monitor the situation there closely.

Responding to questions raised in the Dáil the Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney expressed his concern about the death sentence recently passed on Bahá’í Hamed Bin Haydara, acknowledging that he appears to have been sentenced for his religious beliefs.

“Ireland strongly condemns all forms of persecution on the basis of religion or belief, and is unequivocal in its stance on the death penalty. Ireland calls on all parties in Yemen to immediately release all Baha’i detained due to their religious belief, and to cease the harassment to which they are subjected,” said Mr. Coveney.

The plight of Mr. Haydara was highlighted in questions raised by Mr. Brendan Howlin TD, leader of the Labour Party, Minister Katherine Zappone TD, and by Deputies Maureen O’Sullivan, Tommy Broughan and Darragh O’Brien.

Officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs remain in contact with representatives of the Irish Bahá’í community with whom they have discussed the situation in Yemen, and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

There is growing international condemnation of the death sentence imposed on Mr. Haydara. The Arab world has joined others in deploring the decision.
